Before You Go

What to Expect on a Multi-Day Tour

Start-to-finish service in some of the most spectacular backcountry in the American West.

Our goal at Rim Tours is for you to leave our company feeling like you've had the trip of a lifetime — cared for by competent and professional staff, from your first contact with the office to a handshake or hug from your guides at the end of the trip. We take pride in offering the very best backcountry mountain bike tours anywhere and are always looking for ways to improve on what we do. Many of our clients have ridden with us for over 20 years and are part of our extended Rim Tours family.

A Typical Day on a Backcountry Tour

Our guides rise before the sun and the first order of business is to get the coffee going in our custom-made 1½-gallon French press. A hot, delicious breakfast follows, then breaking down camp and preparing for the riding ahead. Guides will brief you on the day's itinerary and route — one guide heads out on the ride with you while the other drives support, meeting the group at lunch or at camp. Larger groups on our singletrack tours may have three guides along, with two riding with the group.

Along the way your guides will point out interesting sights and lead you on short side hikes to other fascinating places. Our staff's knowledge of the wild places you're traveling through will amaze and delight. You'll soon learn that around each bend in the trail, up most every side canyon, or just setting out on foot from camp, a whole other world of wonder opens up — and we urge you to take a look.

Lunch is usually served trailside from the support truck, though sometimes packed to carry. There are plenty of snack breaks to keep energy levels high throughout the day.

Mid to late afternoon we're back in camp, setting up our comfortable tents and cleaning up with hot washcloths or solar showers. Your guides will serve appetizers followed by a healthy, hearty dinner. Evenings are often shared around a campfire (where permitted) or star gazing — learning constellations, hoping to catch shooting stars and satellites. Stories abound and we'd love to hear yours.

Spectacular Riding

We have searched out our tour routes with one main objective: is the riding worth the trip? In each case the answer is a resounding yes. Each tour is rated according to technical challenge, elevation, and distance, and we'll discuss your experience to make sure you're on an appropriate trip for your ability. If you have any questions about your fitness level or a tour's difficulty, give our office a call.

Amazing Scenery

There's a reason many of our destinations sit inside or just beyond the borders of National Parks, Monuments, and Recreation Areas. Canyonlands National Park offers unique backcountry access for bikes. The riding between Bryce Canyon and Zion is extraordinary. We seek riding experiences that combine natural beauty with incredible trails — creating an experience that goes far beyond what happens on your bike.

Support Vehicle

Because we have a support vehicle — either a large 4WD truck or van and trailer — we can bring whatever you need to be comfortable out in the wild. There is room for one or two passengers in our support trucks for emergencies or other situations. Please note that our charging capability for phones and other devices is limited.

Deluxe Camping

Our camp kits include inflatable mattresses, clean and cozy sleeping bags, and comfortable quality tents. You're welcome to bring your own gear and we'll take good care of it during transport. We provide camp chairs, dry bags for your gear, and hot washcloths at the end of a long day on the bike. Individual attention puts us in a category above the rest.

Camp kits include two-person tents (for those not sharing) and three-person tents for those sharing with a partner. Sleeping bag and sleeping pad are included. Items can also be rented separately.

5-Star Cuisine

The comments we get back from guests raving about the food are always nice to hear. We love to eat well, and an expertly prepared meal in a fantastic backcountry setting can't be beat. Fresh ingredients and plenty of love in the preparation will have you wishing you could ride and eat with us even longer. We can honor dietary restrictions as long as we know ahead of time — please let us know on your registration form or by email.

  • Breakfast — served hot from fresh, healthful ingredients, with a different main dish each morning.
  • Lunch — served trailside from a table of delicious fresh ingredients, or packed by riders from ingredients laid out by guides, depending on the itinerary.
  • Dinner — the gastronomical highlight of the tour. Our guides are skilled backcountry chefs working from Rim Tours' menu of unique meal plans.

Top Quality Bikes

We love to ride, and we appreciate top-quality equipment — and think you will too. Our relationship with Santa Cruz Bicycles goes back years, and each season we receive a new fleet of Santa Cruz full-suspension bikes that are expertly maintained throughout the year and available for sale at the end of the season.

Packing

To ensure your comfort, please do your best to follow our recommended pack list. Most of our tours are in high-country locations with weather that can be very different from where you're coming from. Bring gear for all kinds of weather — no matter what the forecast says, it's best to be prepared. The support vehicle carries a lot, and our aim is to keep you smiling no matter the conditions.

Weather

Please check the weather prior to departure. Each tour page links to the closest weather station for your destination.

The Personal Touch

Rim Tours is a small company and our staff is family — not just to us, but to our clients. We foster long-term, multi-year relationships with many of our guests. We hope you'll become part of the Rim Tours family.

Skill Levels Explained

Our multi-day tours range from moderate to intermediate to advanced in difficulty. Trail surfaces may include dirt road, 4WD routes, and/or singletrack. Please make sure you're choosing a tour appropriate for your skill level. Call our office if you have any questions.

Moderate

Suitable for riders with average to good fitness who engage in some form of regular exercise and are comfortable on a bike for 2+ hours. Hills and descents are typically short and can be walked. Trail surfaces will vary with occasional obstacles (rocks, roots, sand) that can be ridden or walked.

Intermediate

Suitable for riders with good to excellent fitness. Previous mountain bike experience is recommended. Trail surfaces may include uneven terrain, narrow singletrack, and obstacles. Hills and descents are moderate to strenuous and require some skill.

Advanced

Suitable for experienced mountain bikers only with excellent fitness and strong bike-handling skills. Riding is primarily on rugged 4WD doubletrack or high-elevation singletrack. Sections can be very challenging with frequent, significant climbs and descents, often at 8,000–12,000 ft elevation.

Singletrack tours add an element of technical difficulty due to trail narrowness. If you're considering an intermediate or advanced singletrack trip, previous singletrack experience is essential.
