The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is one of the best summer mountain biking destinations in the American West, with cool Ponderosa pine forests at 8,000-9,000 feet elevation, flowing Arizona Trail singletrack, and the chance to ride along the actual rim of the Grand Canyon on the Rainbow Rim Trail. While the rest of Arizona and Utah bakes in triple-digit heat, the North Rim sits comfortably in the 70s and low 80s, making it the perfect escape for a multi-day guided bike tour. Rim Tours has been running our Grand Canyon North Rim tour for years, and it consistently ranks as one of our guestsโ most memorable experiences.
The Arizona Trail: Days 1-2
The ride begins on the Arizona Trail, an 800-mile National Scenic Trail that stretches from the Mexico border to the Utah state line. The section that crosses the North Rim is among the finest singletrack anywhere in the country, a flowing ribbon of buff dirt winding through towering Ponderosa pines and bright aspen groves.
The riding here is a welcome contrast to Moabโs rock-dominated terrain. The trail surface is primarily packed forest dirt with gentle undulations, occasional root sections, and just enough technical features to keep things interesting without being exhausting. The overall character is flowy and fast, the kind of singletrack where you find yourself grinning for miles at a time.
Between the trail sections, you ride through high-elevation meadows filled with wildflowers and native grasses. The quiet is remarkable. The North Rim receives about one-tenth the visitors of the South Rim, and on the trail, you may go hours without seeing another person. The combination of cool forest air, world-class singletrack, and absolute solitude is something most riders never forget.
The Rainbow Rim Trail: Days 3-4
After two days on the Arizona Trail, the route traverses west to the Rainbow Rim Trail, a section of singletrack located just outside the National Park boundary. This is where the trip goes from excellent to extraordinary.
The Rainbow Rim Trail runs for approximately 18 miles along the North Rim, with multiple sections that ride directly along the edge of the Grand Canyon. The views are staggering: a mile-deep chasm of layered rock stretching to the horizon, with the Colorado River visible as a thin green ribbon far below. You are mountain biking on the edge of one of the great natural wonders of the world.
The trail itself is moderately technical, with rocky sections, some short steep pitches, and occasional exposure. It is well within the ability of intermediate riders, especially with the support and guidance of experienced Rim Tours guides who know every section.
Camp Life on the North Rim
The camping on this tour is exceptional. Our guides select camp spots that maximize the experience, including sites near the rim with walking-distance access to sunset viewpoints that will take your breath away. Watching the sun set into the Grand Canyon from a private viewpoint, just steps from your camp chair, is one of those experiences that stays with you permanently.
Our guides handle all the logistics: gourmet camp meals (breakfast, packed lunch, and dinner), camp setup, gear transport, and route planning. You ride with a daypack and your water. Everything else travels in the support vehicle.
Mornings start with fresh-brewed coffee and hot breakfast before heading out for the dayโs ride. Evenings feature full-course dinners that our guests regularly describe as restaurant-quality. Between the riding and the meals, you have time to explore side trails, read a book, or simply sit on the rim and watch the light change across the canyon.
Elevation and Weather
The North Rim sits at approximately 8,000-9,000 feet elevation, which delivers dramatically different weather than the desert floor. Summer daytime temperatures typically range from 70-85ยฐF, compared to 100ยฐF+ in Moab or Phoenix. Nights are cool, often dropping into the 40s, making for excellent sleeping weather.
Afternoon thunderstorms are possible in July and August during monsoon season. The storms are typically brief and dramatic, dumping rain for 30-60 minutes before clearing to brilliant sunset skies. Our guides monitor weather closely and adjust ride plans when needed.
The elevation also means the season is relatively short. The North Rim road (AZ-67) typically opens in mid-May and closes with the first heavy snow, usually in late October or November. Our tour dates are scheduled within this window.
Who This Tour Is For
The Grand Canyon North Rim tour is ideal for intermediate to advanced riders who want a multi-day backcountry experience with world-class scenery and support. You should be comfortable riding 15-25 miles per day on singletrack with some technical sections. The elevation (8,000-9,000 feet) means cardiovascular effort is higher than at sea level, so reasonable fitness is important.
This tour is also an excellent choice for riders who find Moabโs summer heat prohibitive but want a guided mountain bike experience during June, July, or August. While Moab bakes, the North Rim is cool and green.
How It Compares to Other Rim Tours Multi-Day Trips
If the Grand Canyon North Rim appeals to you, here is how it compares to our other multi-day options:
- White Rim (3-4 days) โ Desert riding in Canyonlands, more exposed terrain, moderate difficulty. Best in spring and fall.
- The Maze (5 days) โ Remote backcountry Canyonlands, more challenging jeep road riding, ultimate solitude. Spring and fall.
- Kokopelli Trail โ Point-to-point from Grand Junction to Moab, diverse terrain, 4-5 days. Spring and fall.
- Grand Canyon North Rim (4-5 days) โ Cool forest singletrack plus rim riding. The best option for summer.
Frequently Asked Questions
How difficult is the Grand Canyon North Rim mountain bike tour?
The riding is moderate to intermediate. The Arizona Trail sections are flowing and non-technical, while the Rainbow Rim Trail has some rocky sections and short steep pitches. Daily distances range from 15-25 miles. The main fitness consideration is the 8,000-9,000 foot elevation, which increases cardiovascular effort by roughly 15-20% compared to sea level riding.
What time of year is best for the North Rim tour?
June through September is the riding season. July and August offer the warmest weather but also the highest chance of afternoon thunderstorms. June and September tend to have the most stable weather and the most comfortable temperatures.
Can I ride the Grand Canyon North Rim on my own?
You can ride both the Arizona Trail and Rainbow Rim Trail independently, but the logistics are challenging. The North Rim is remote (4+ hours from the nearest major airport in Las Vegas or Salt Lake City), water sources are limited, and cell service is nonexistent. A guided tour handles all logistics, carries food and water, and provides local knowledge of the trail and terrain.
Do you ride inside Grand Canyon National Park?
The Arizona Trail crosses through the park, and some sections are rideable within park boundaries. The Rainbow Rim Trail is located on adjacent Kaibab National Forest land. Our guides plan routes that maximize the best riding while complying with all park and forest regulations.
What bikes work best for this terrain?
A trail bike with 120-140mm of travel is ideal. Full suspension is recommended but not required. Our rental fleet includes bikes well-suited to this terrain. The trail surfaces are primarily dirt with some rocks, so aggressive Moab-style tires are not necessary. A good all-around trail tire works perfectly.
